While odorless, flame retardants like polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, are far from innocuous. They were recently identified as one of 17 “high priority” chemical groups that should be avoided to reduce your breast cancer risk,1 for instance. Previous studies have shown that an estimated 90 percent of Americansalready have flame-retardant chemicals in their bodies, making this an issue well worth considering—especially if you have young children, or are of child-bearing age.
