In the past decade the U.S. has become home to a new species, the Asian longhorn. Dr. Gregory Poland from the Mayo Clinic says this tick represents the first time in 50 years a new species has made its way to the U.S.8 Because it is an emerging threat in the U.S. the CDC recommends that surveillance should include testing for pathogens.
