Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 protects people with disabilities and other qualifying health conditions from discrimination and unequal treatment in federally funded educational programs.1 Parents of students with disabilities can set up a customized plan (504 plan) with their school so their children can learn in a regular classroom without necessarily needing an individualized educational plan (IEP) or special services.
