Although supplements of essential nutrients can have therapeutic potential, they are qualitatively different from drugs. Many drugs are more toxic than micronutrients and have widespread and unique biological qualities. Failure to take into account the multiple functions of essential nutrients and how disease states can dramatically alter micronutrient needs have created design flaws in many studies that have been translated into erroneous interpretations.
