Anti-Hunger Advocates Oppose Limits on Food Benefits in Farm Bill
Anti-hunger groups are calling on Congress to protect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – as negotiations continue on the massive 2023 farm bill, due this fall. SNAP, known in California as Cal Fresh, provides an average benefit of $6 per person per day. Luis Guardia – president of the Food Research and Action Center – said he wants SNAP benefits to be higher, and more accessible. Read more.

A new report from Friends of the Earth explores the potential implications of this novel use of genetic engineering, something that is fundamentally different from the genetically engineered (GE) crops that have been the center of debate for decades. In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer acknowledged the carcinogenicity of glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. Shamefully, the IARC decision didn’t influence the Environmental Protection Agency, but Bayer (which now owns Monsanto) said that, to limit liability, by 2023 it would stop selling glyphosate-based herbicides to consumers, limiting sales to farmers and pesticide professionals.
