* Iconic cereal brand Nature’s Path has quit the Organic Trade Association (OTA) as a protest to save organic. * The company says the OTA “is not working in step with organic advocates to protect and strengthen the original principles of the organic movement” and is not acting with sincerity when it comes to hydroponics, the most divisive issue in organic. * BASF and Cargill have been granted membership in the OTA, even though their GMO and chemical products “are actively harming” organic farmers. Thanks to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for providing a first-hand account of the sixth day in court in the Dewayne Johnson vs. Monsanto Co. trial. Proceedings began in San Francisco Superior Court on July 9. The plaintiff, Dewayne Johnson, a 46-year-old former school groundskeeper who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma four years ago, claims Monsanto hid evidence that the active ingredient in its Roundup herbicide, glyphosate, caused his cancer. This is the first case to go to trial among hundreds of lawsuits alleging Roundup caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The trial is expected to last about a month. Read more.

Is Recent MMR Vaccine Campaign Linked to Reported Measles Outbreak in Ukraine

In recent years there has been a shortage of measles vaccines in Ukraine. Vaccination rates had dropped to 31% in 2016 and were the lowest in Europe and, yet, there were hardly any cases of measles. In 2017, sufficient vaccines became available for a ‘catch-up campaign’ and 90% of the children in Ukraine received the MMR. Since then, there has been an explosion of reported cases of measles. CNN: People Sickened Across 10 States by Parasite in Outbreak Linked to McDonald’s Salads

This week, federal health officials announced that more illnesses from cyclospora were reported after eating McDonald’s salads. Currently, 163 (up from 61 last week) people in 10 states- including three hospitalizations but no deaths- have taken ill. The FDA is currently working with McDonald’s to find which salad ingredients are making people sick and then to trace them through the supply chain. Read more.
